The role of the New Medicines Service (NMS) is to provide extra help and advice to people living in England who have been prescribed medicines to treat certain long-term conditions. Until now, the range of conditions covered by the NMS has been limited, but the ROS warmly welcomes news that the list will expand to cover osteoporosis from 1 September.

Craig Jones, Chief Executive at the ROS said:

“We know that many people find it challenging to stick to their medication regime for osteoporosis and that the benefits depend on compliance over a prolonged period. Our analysis of Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) standards, published last week, showed that most Trusts are falling behind on monitoring and follow-up, leaving people without the advice and check-in they need.

"Osteoporosis medication is safe and effective, but people need a source of ongoing support. Questions about medication are one of the top themes for calls to our Specialist Nurse Helpline.

"We warmly welcome this news that the NMS is going to join the effort to help people feel more comfortable with their medication. We’ll be delighted to work alongside our community pharmacists colleagues across the country in making a difference for people living with the condition.”
