The Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) is pleased to announce its successful Better Bones campaign has been shortlisted for a PR industry award.

The shortlisting, in the PR Week UK Awards ‘Public Affairs’ category, follows the charity’s recent success at the CIPR Excellence Awards. ROS was presented with a Mark of Excellence at the ceremony, in recognition of the work the charity has done to improve access to life-saving bone-strengthening drugs through its Better Bones campaign with the Sunday Express.

The PR Week UK awards, showcasing the outstanding achievements and contributions made by PR professionals from across the country, are due to take place on 16 October 2024.

ROS, the UK’s largest national charity dedicated to improving bone health and beating osteoporosis, recently announced that our CEO Craig Jones has been shortlisted for a Third Sector award in the ‘Charity Chief Executive’ category, recognising chief executives who have made an outstanding contribution to their organisation or the wider sector. Craig was shortlisted because of the Better Bones breakthrough, amongst other examples of impact.

Over 46 weeks, the Better Bones campaign called for the extension of Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), the gold standard for systematically identifying, assessing and treating anyone who breaks a bone after age 50. Prior to the campaign, only half of NHS trusts in England and Wales had a FLS due to a brutal postcode lottery.

Earlier this year, the campaign successfully secured the biggest policy change in history for people living with osteoporosis when the previous Health Secretary, Victoria Atkins, promised in Parliament to extend FLS to all 42 Integrated Care Systems in England by 2030 and Health Secretary Wes Streeting pledged to match the commitment.

Craig Jones, Chief Executive at the ROS, said:

“We’re immensely pleased that Better Bones has been shortlisted at the PR Week UK Awards, recognising once again the enormous efforts invested by those involved throughout the campaign.

“Receiving the backing of both main parties of Government leading up to the general election proved that osteoporosis deserves a place at the top of the public health agenda. To also be recognised amongst top PR industry professionals is a very flattering response, which we’re all very proud of.”
