Her Majesty The Queen, President of the Royal Osteoporosis Society, presented the first Queen’s Award for Osteoporosis during a reception at Clarence House on Thursday 3 October.

Previously known as The Duchess of Cornwall’s Award since it was created in 2009, the Award is given to an individual in recognition for an outstanding contribution to treatment, research and leadership in the field of osteoporosis.

The Queen presented this year’s newly renamed award to Dr Nicola Peel. As a consultant with more than 30 years’ experience, Dr Peel developed a new assessment model to help improve the evaluation of people at risk of fractures which has since been implemented by other NHS clinics nationwide. She played a leading role in securing the commitment to universal Fracture Liaison Services, which play an important role in identifying, assessing and treating osteoporosis. Dr Peel is also an adviser to the all-party parliamentary group on osteoporosis and bone health, and an ROS trustee.

Sunday Express editor David Wooding and Ruth Sunderland, group business editor of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, were both recognised with a special ROS certificate of appreciation for launching osteoporosis newspaper campaigns along with Stephen Robinson who has shared his experience of living with the condition.

At the reception, Her Majesty thanked campaigners and volunteers and encouraged them to continue their work to raise awareness and improve treatment for patients with the condition.
