Bone Health and Vegan Diets

Our Clinical Advisor, Sarah Leyland, spoke to Dietician Heather from The Vegan Society to discuss how people following a vegan lifestyle can take care of their bones. Heather shared with us that The Vegan Society receive regular questions about how those considering the diet change can maintain bone health and prevent conditions like osteoporosis.

During the video conversation, Sarah and Heather discuss how to protect your health if you already have low bone density, how to get enough calcium, protein and other nutrients on a vegan diet and how exercise plays a large role in bone health, including how to choose the best exercises to promote bone strength. If you are someone at risk of osteoporosis and fractures especially as an older person, Sarah recommends tests you can ask your GP to do. Guidance is also given for teenage vegans to ensure their growing bones are supported. It’s a really varied discussion and essential viewing for current and prospective vegans alike.
