Avoiding Slips & Falls This Winter

Winter can be a concerning time if you’re worried about your stability or you’ve previously had a fracture. The days are shorter, nights are longer and it can be a little harder to see when we walk outside. It’s still important to get fresh air, exercise outdoors and look after your mental health despite the lack of daylight. There are some easy steps you can take to help you feel more confident outside.
- Keep Warm
Muscles become more tense when the body is cold and this can affect balance. You may feel steadier if you dress for warmth, helping the muscles remain relaxed and flexible.
- Wear the right shoes
Well-fitted, securely fastened shoes with a good tread will grip the ground better. Taking shorter steps and turning the toes slightly outward also help with stability. Using walking poles or a stick will also help too.
- Stay connected
Take your mobile phone with you when you’re outside, even if you are going for a walk around the garden. Should anything happen, your loved ones are on hand.
- Is the trip necessary?
If the weather is particularly bad, double check to make sure your trip outside is necessary. Perhaps your friends or neighbours can help instead by taking trips on your behalf? You can also minimise your need to leave the house on wintery days by having a stock of essentials at home. If you do have to go outside, leave extra time to avoid feeling rushed. Leaving a little earlier than you need to will also allow you more time to check the ground as you walk, or as you step out of a car.
- Choose the right paths
It’s a good idea to avoid walking between cars, on grassy slopes and poorly lit areas. It’s typically safer to walk on cleared, lit paths when walking outside. We also recommend keeping your head up as much as possible as leaning forward can affect your balance.
