Making osteoporosis a priority for politicians
Osteoporosis affects more than 3.5 million people across the UK. One in two women and one in five men over 50 will suffer a bone break due to osteoporosis. Known as the ‘silent disease’, it causes over half a million broken bones each year - one every minute. When we measure disease burden in disability adjusted life years (DALYs) - a metric that adds together premature deaths and years lived with disability - breaks caused by the disease rank fourth, behind only heart disease, dementia and lung cancer.
Despite this, two-thirds of people at high risk of the disease are not receiving the treatment they need.
You can help change that by writing to your elected representative today.

How do I take action?
You can use our template letter - just replace the highlighted fields to personalise your letter. Adding your address is particularly important as it lets your elected representative know you are a constituent.
Adding a brief personal story (for example, when you were diagnosed or how osteoporosis has affected your daily life) can make a huge difference in showing why this matters right now.
Why we need you to take action
Parliamentarians - whether in the UK Parliament, Welsh Senedd, Scottish Parliament or Northern Ireland Assembly - play a crucial role in deciding health priorities.
Osteoporosis is too often overlooked. Over the past five years, we have been breaking the silence on osteoporosis, but we need your help to reach even more politicians. By writing to your elected representative, you bring this serious issue directly to their attention and make sure they are aware of the urgent need for action.
How do I contact my representative?

What happens next?
As soon as you hear back - whether they promise to act or decline - please let us know by emailing policy@theros.org.uk. Even a brief reply helps us demonstrate to Ministers that voters demand better osteoporosis care. Every response counts.
