Message from the team

A very warm welcome to our 2019 programme.

We start 2019on a positive note; with a DXA Scanner at Station Plaza and a Fracture Liaison Service at the Conquest. We, as a support group have put pressure on the powers that be; with a result that the waiting times for a 1st appointment with a Rheumatology consultant is now within the governments guidelines. However, the committee will keep vigilant; as they do not want this to creep up to the 48 weeks it was a few years ago!  Unfortunately, as yet, we do not have a substantive consultant on the horizon, at the Conquest.

The Hydro Pool sessions at the Conquest Hospital, are still proving very popular, in this, its third year.

Last year the group were able to sponsor two FLS nurses to complete their Fracture Prevention Practitioner Training and we are hoping to continue in helping to support other local health professionals in 2019.

Finally, can we draw your attention to our event on Monday 20 May, when the ROS Helpline nurse will be coming to Hastings.

2 September 2019 - Annual group update, and osteoporosis “your questions answered”

The meeting was very well attended and we were delighted to see some new members.

After introductions, a short update was given on the activities of the group over the past year.

Subjects covered were:

  • Re-election of team members
  • On-going/future projects
  • How to get involved with the group, such as Group Facebook or ROS website
  • Hydro sessions
  • Presentation of accounts and fundraising
  • Thanks from the team for everyone's continued support

Our “your questions answered” meeting has become very popular with members.

Dr Binodh gave another very informative talk, touching on areas such as:

  • Medication and managing osteoporosis, including diet, alcohol and exercise
  • How GP’s use various tools such as FRAX, DXA and personal history to diagnose and treat patients
  • That everyone is an individual and, so, no one size fits all

Dr Bindoh then gave the audience a couple of very interesting case studies of people with osteoporosis and how they found the root cause of the condition.

The latter part of the afternoon was given over to member’s questions and everyone came away with something useful about the condition.

The afternoon concluded with tea and biscuits and, of course, a good chat.

Hastings group update and questions meeting

15 July 2019 – Physiotherapy and osteoporosis

We enjoyed another well-attended meeting at the White Rock Hotel.

Ross Tippett, Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at the Conquest Hospital, gave a very interesting talk on the subject of physiotherapy and osteoporosis.

Topics covered were:

  • Whole-body (compound) strength exercises 2-3 times a week
  • Daily impact exercises (of varying intensity)
  • Daily balance exercises
  • 30 minutes of activity to make you slightly breathless 5 times weekly

The afternoon concluded with tea & biscuits.

Find out more about exercise for osteoporosis and bone health.

14 June 2019 – Carers Week awareness event

The Hastings and Area Group supported their local Sainsbury’s during Carers Week, with an awareness event.

During the afternoon, the committee had a number of the general public enquiries, requesting information about osteoporosis and details of the group's meetings.

The committee agreed that it was a very useful event, which raised £35.

20 May 2019 – ROS Helpline nurse event

What a great turn out we had for the ROS Specialist Helpline nurse event.

More than 40 members and general public attended this brilliant meeting, at the White Rock Hotel, St. Leonards-on-Sea.

The audience was treated to a thoroughly interesting talk given the Royal Osteoporosis Specialist Helpline nurses, Rachel Ashcroft-Hands and Louise Maine. Topics covered were:

  • Introduction to osteoporosis
  • Drug treatment
  • Exercise

This was then followed by a question and answer session.

Tea, coffee and biscuits were served.

A raffle was held, which raised £44 for much needed funds.

Everyone agreed it was a very interesting and informative meeting.

1 April 2019 – Fire Brigade

It was no April fool’s joke, when Green Watch, from Hastings Fire Station, arrived to speak to the Hastings & Area Osteoporosis Support Group about safety in the home.

The firemen, from Green Watch, gave a very informative talk, covering aspects such as; what do in an emergency, smoke alarms, “message in a bottle” and how members could have a free fire/house check form the fire brigade.

The members thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and our guest speakers were presented with a box of cookies to take back to the station.

The afternoon finished with tea and biscuits.
